Interesting facts about the MHP Arena Stuttgart

Construction work on the MHP Arena in Stuttgart began in 1929 and the stadium was originally built for the 15th German Gymnastics Festival. Today’s VfB Stuttgart Arena was officially opened on 23 July 1933. In its original state, the stadium had a total capacity of around 40,000 spectators. VfB played its first home match on 20 August 1933 against Schalke 04.

Over the years, the capacity limit was repeatedly extended. At the end of the 1950s, the Neckarstadion could hold an impressive 100,000 spectators. However, the capacity was then reduced again for the 1974 World Cup. Following a further renovation, the stadium now “only” holds 60,058 fans. This means that the home of VfB Stuttgart is still one of the largest stadiums in the German Bundesliga.

Legendary matches were played in the Stuttgart arena several years ago. In 1959, for example, the final of the European Cup of Champions took place. At that time, Real Madrid met Stade Reims. The DFB Cup final was last held in Stuttgart in 1981. VfB also reached the final of the UEFA Cup in the 1980s. The home match ended in a 3:3 draw on 17 May 1989.

But it’s not just football that is celebrated here. In 1976, the MHP Arena Stuttgart also hosted the first open-air concert in a German stadium. None other than the Rolling Stones were cheered on at the time. In 1939, a record that still stands today was also broken. Back then, the boxing match between Max Schmeling and Adolf Heuser took place in front of around 60,000 spectators.
