Since the 2018/2019 season, the UEFA Nations League has also been held during the ongoing club competitions in professional football. The tournament begins every two years and runs as a league of national teams, so to speak. For the most part, the matches also replace the previously customary friendly matches between national teams from Europe.

In this respect, attending one of these matches also means experiencing the national teams in an important duel. Every win is important. Many fans want to buy Nations League tickets, especially for games involving major nations such as France, Spain or Germany. The best seats in the stadium are then sometimes snapped up quickly.

What is the purpose of the Nations League?

As mentioned, the UEFA Nations League is an important competition for national teams, while friendly matches are usually only played for testing purposes. The tournament is therefore highly relevant and there is pressure to perform. In particular, the final table of the Nations League replaces the UEFA coefficient and the seeding lists that were previously used for major tournaments. This means that the Nations League provides a direct route to qualification for the European Championship and World Cup.

Which teams play in the Nations League?

All UEFA member associations take part in the Nations League. This means that a total of 55 national teams are represented. These are divided into four leagues (A, B, C and D) and can be promoted or relegated. It is also important to note that only the first half of the Nations League takes place as a league or group stage.

This is followed by a final round in which a winner is determined via elimination matches. Until recently, this final round took place directly after the group stage and the four group winners of League A qualified directly for it. From the 2024/2025 season, the group matches will be followed by a quarter-final, in which the first and second-placed teams in each group will play a second leg for a place in the final round, which will still feature four teams.

The previous winners of the UEFA Nations League are:

  • 2018/2019: Portugal (after 1:0 against the Netherlands)
  • 2020/2021: France (after 2:1 against Spain)
  • 2022/2023: Spain (after 5:4 in the final against Croatia)

How do I get tickets for the Nations League?

If you want to buy Nations League tickets, you need to keep an eye on the ticket sales of UEFA as the organiser and those of the individual national teams. It makes a difference whether the matches take place in the group stage or in the final round. For group stage matches, tickets are almost exclusively available from the respective teams or national associations.

For match tickets in the final round, fans can also apply directly to UEFA. However, UEFA only allocates a small proportion of the total allocation. Around 90% of the seats will continue to go to the participating teams. This means that tickets for the final round can also be purchased directly from the national associations.

However, anyone wishing to purchase a Nations League ticket directly from UEFA, the DFB or other associations must bear in mind that tickets are almost always allocated by application and lottery. This is always the case for the final round matches, as experience shows that demand exceeds supply. Fans can apply on the UEFA website and on the websites of the national associations. Apart from that, buying tickets on the secondary market is of course an option for Nations League tickets.

What are the cheapest tickets for the Nations League?

The prices for Nations League tickets vary greatly from country to country. During the group stage, the respective associations determine the ticket prices. In this respect, matches involving teams from lower leagues can result in favourable prices in the low double-digit range. For matches involving major football nations, such as Germany against the Netherlands, higher prices are to be expected – for the best seats, prices can easily exceed 100 euros.

The price for match tickets in the final round, on the other hand, is set by UEFA and is usually divided into four categories. The national associations also use these prices as a guide. For the 2023 finals, these were

  • Category 3: 20 euros each
  • Category 2: 30 to 50 euros
  • Category 1: 50 to 70 euros
  • Premium category: 90 to 120 euros

Logically, the higher the category, the better the seats in the stadium. Only the seats in the premium category are located in the centre and at pitch level. In addition, UEFA always offers barrier-free tickets, which always cost the same as the cheapest category and include a free ticket for an accompanying person.

Nations League tickets on the secondary market

The demand for tickets can be significantly higher than the capacity of the stadiums, especially for high-class matches. Nations League matches involving France, Spain, Italy, England and Germany sell out quickly, while many applicants are left empty-handed. Then the secondary market with portals such as Viagogo, StubHub or Reservix is the only chance to get tickets.

In fact, tickets can often still be snapped up there even shortly before the match dates. In this respect, it is worth keeping an eye on the offers at all times and grabbing them quickly if necessary. Especially as ticket prices can be conveniently compared directly on the portals so that the cheapest option can be found quickly. A few important aspects apply to Nations League tickets on the secondary market:

  • Ticket portals act as intermediaries between private sellers and buyers.
  • Prices are determined by the sellers themselves and can therefore be higher than in official ticket sales.
  • For maximum buyer protection, prospective customers should always use secure payment methods such as PayPal.
  • In the case of personalised tickets, please note the transfer of personal data or the transfer of tickets after purchase.

The last point in particular is important for ticket purchases from ticket portals, but is not a problem. UEFA always issues tickets as e-tickets and also uses an official ticket app for this purpose. Tickets can be transferred to other people via this app, which must be arranged by the current ticket holder. This also means that a Nations League ticket purchased via ticket exchanges can reach the purchaser directly and in the shortest possible time.

Where do Nations League matches take place?

During the group stage, the national matches take place in the host country, as is usual for friendly and test matches. From the final round onwards, however, a host is selected for the final matches from the four participating teams. This means that, for example, if the German team takes part in the final, German fans may have to travel abroad.

When do Nations League matches take place?

The competition usually begins in September of one year and ends in June of the following year. However, there are deviations to avoid overlaps with European Championship or World Cup dates. The matches themselves take place on different days of the week, so afternoons and evenings during the week as well as weekends are common. However, the few days of the final round matches are determined by UEFA so that the Nations League final always takes place on a Sunday.
