The history of the Arminia Bielefeld club

Arminia experienced its first great era in the 1920s. In 1922, they reached the final of the Lower Rhine Cup, which they lost 2:1 to Rot-Weiss Essen. In 1924, they reached the semi-finals of the DFB Cup, where they narrowly lost 3:1 to Eintracht Frankfurt. The following year, they went one step further and reached the final, where they again met Eintracht Frankfurt.

This time, however, they were victorious and the club became the first ever Westphalian state cup winners with a 2:1 victory. The following years were characterised by financial problems, which led to the club having to file for bankruptcy in 1931. Shortly afterwards, the club was able to resume playing and finished second in its league in 1932.

After the Second World War, Arminia did not immediately manage to return to the first division. It was not until 1950 that the club was promoted to the Oberliga West (the highest division in West Germany at the time). Over the next eight years, the team moved back and forth between this league and the second division. In 1958, they were finally promoted to the Bundesliga, from which they were relegated after just one season. They were promoted again in 1960 and remained in the Bundesliga for another four years.

In 1964, Arminia again ran into financial difficulties and had to file for bankruptcy. Although the club was able to continue playing in the lower divisions, it was not until 1974 that it was able to return to the Bundesliga 2. The following year, the club was promoted back to the first division, where it has remained to this day. In 1977, Arminia reached the final of the DFB Cup for the second time, but were again defeated by Eintracht Frankfurt.

In 1985, the club narrowly became champions and finished second behind Bayern Munich. The following season was characterised by financial problems, which led to several players having to leave the club. Despite these difficulties, the club managed to stay in the first division and even reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup in 1988. However, the team was unable to maintain this success and was relegated back to the second division in 1992.

The club was able to continue playing in the lower leagues, but only managed to return to the 2nd Bundesliga in 2002. Since then, the club has played in the 3rd Bundesliga. In the 2017/18 season, the club had some financial difficulties and only narrowly avoided relegation. Nevertheless, they managed to gain promotion and finished 4th in their league at the end of the season. In the 2020/21 season, they won the league and were promoted to the Bundesliga.

The club is currently coached by Uwe Neuhaus and plays its home games in the Schüco Arena, which holds 27,454 spectators. Arminia Bielefeld has a long and eventful history dating back over 100 years. The club has experienced highs and lows, but is still one of the most popular teams in Germany.
