It is the motherland of football and probably the most famous and exciting football league in the world – the English Premier League. Whether Manchester City or United, Arsenal FC or Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur or Liverpool FC – English football clubs have dominated European football for years and are the measure of all things.

Hardly any fan doesn’t dream of being there live at Anfield Road, Old Trafford or one of the many other stadiums. So it’s no wonder that the stadiums in England are almost always sold out. In fact, it is fans from all over the world, and by no means just English visitors, who fill the stands. The rush for Premier League tickets knows no bounds.

How can I get Premier League tickets?

First of all, it has to be said that the ticket situation in the Premier League is difficult from the fans’ point of view. On the one hand, there are hardly any cheap football tickets, on the other hand, it is usually difficult to get one at all. In principle, most tickets always go to members of the clubs, while season ticket holders already occupy a large proportion of the allotments. Day tickets, on the other hand, are very rarely on sale.

So if you don’t live in England and have contacts with club members or season ticket holders, you need to be lucky to secure a one-off ticket for a Premier League match. Or you will have to pay a much higher price than you are used to paying for tickets in the Bundesliga.

So buying tickets is certainly not impossible, even for fans from Germany. On the one hand, it is of course always worth visiting the online ticket shops on the football clubs’ websites. Depending on the match, tickets may well be available. However, some of the clubs require membership to buy tickets.

There is also the secondary market (often incorrectly referred to as the black market). Buying tickets via ticket exchanges such as Viagogo is legal in any case. As experience shows that many ticket holders sell their tickets for various reasons, there are many offers for Premier League tickets – often even at short notice.

How much do you pay for Premier League tickets in England?

As already mentioned, the price level for tickets in England is considerably higher than in the Bundesliga. Ticket prices of less than €30 are an absolute rarity and generally tend to be for smaller clubs or only a very small proportion of stadium capacity. Prices from 60 euros are more the rule and three-digit prices are also common.

It is difficult to determine a generalised, average price for Premier League tickets. Rather, the pricing is very dynamic, meaning that the cost of a football ticket depends on a number of factors:

  • the respective football club and its basic pricing policy
  • the respective opponent
  • the standings of both teams
  • the time of the match (e.g. early or late in the season and the respective day of the week)
  • the different ticket categories

The opponent in particular plays a role in the basic ticket prices, as this naturally determines the demand. Many clubs therefore divide the matches into three categories, whereby there are a few (usually 3 or 4) cheaper matches and some (usually 5 or 6) top matches with a surcharge.

Tottenham Hotspurs, for example, charge €75 for the cheapest ticket for an adult for a top match (category A). For a game in the cheapest category C, it is 43 euros. It should be noted that these tickets at the lowest price are always only small contingents, which cover one or two blocks in the stadium.

Where can I get the cheapest Premier League tickets?

Interestingly, the absolute cheapest Premier League tickets are available in Liverpool. For £9, the equivalent of around €10, there are a very small number of seats at Anfield Road, although these only offer a very limited view. Without question, these tickets always sell out quickly.

Similarly, there are some tickets at Chelsea FC’s Stamford Bridge for 25 pounds, which is around 28.50 euros. The cheapest tickets for the other top Premier League clubs are:

  • Manchester City – around 50 euros (44 pounds)
  • Newcastle United – around 50 euros (44 pounds)
  • Manchester United – around 41 euros (36 pounds)
  • Arsenal FC – around 32 euros (28.50 pounds)

As mentioned, the contingents for these relatively inexpensive tickets are very limited everywhere, making it almost impossible for a non-member to obtain such a ticket via the online shop. In addition, these football tickets are also unlikely to be sold on the secondary market at their original price.

Away tickets in the Premier League as an option

Another rather cheap ticket category, which is available everywhere, are away tickets in the Premier League. All tickets for visiting fans generally cost a maximum of €35, in rare cases even slightly less. This upper limit was set by the league and is intended to make away support affordable.

However, it should also be noted that the guest blocks naturally only offer a few thousand seats, the tickets sell out quickly and almost exclusively go to club members anyway. Nonetheless, various away tickets from Liverpool, Manchester and co. are always available on the ticket exchanges – at varying prices depending on the match.

Where are Premier League tickets most expensive?

While Chelsea FC has a few of the cheapest tickets, it also has the most expensive tickets in the Premier League. For €275 (£240) you can get special seats with the best view at Stamford Bridge – mind you, this is not a VIP package.

West Ham, Fulham, Arsenal and Tottenham are the other football clubs in England with high ticket prices – the most expensive there for between 115 and 120 euros each. This contrasts with Liverpool FC and Manchester United, where the most expensive tickets “only” cost around €68 and €80 respectively.

In general, it can be said that tickets in the Premier League are most expensive when it comes to top matches. On the one hand, tickets are then quickly sold out and on the other hand, the offers on ticket exchanges are then all the higher in price, as the demand is enormous.

When can you buy tickets for the Premier League?

At the beginning of the season, football clubs in England start selling or renewing season tickets. Only then, and after the fixture list has been finalised by the league management, do the remaining tickets go on sale. The clubs act differently:

The smaller clubs start the individual ticket sales 4 to 6 weeks before a match. At the larger clubs, which also have thousands of fans abroad, ticket sales are usually open from the start of the season for all matches of the season – even if for many no exact date has yet been set. So if you are keen on certain fixtures between two top clubs, you may have to be quick.

Buying Premier League tickets on the secondary market

As soon as the individual clubs start their ticket sales, there are often already offers on the ticket exchanges Viagogo, StubHub and other providers. In the case of the big clubs, this can be months before a match. As these are always offers from private ticket holders, the variety of prices and offers can change at any time.

Particularly due to certain situations in the table, some football tickets can rise enormously in value, so that prices in the four-digit range are not uncommon towards the season finale. This is another reason why the secondary market is often disrespectfully referred to as the black market. However, buying tickets via the aforementioned exchanges and marketplaces is absolutely legal.

However, transactions that take place via eBay, classified adverts or social media are more risky. In particular, a bank transfer is required as a payment method, after which fraudsters sometimes send no tickets or fake tickets. Viagogo and the like, on the other hand, allow PayPal and similar payment methods to be used, which offers buyers protection.

Are Premier League tickets personalised?

Personalised tickets are an important aspect when buying tickets from private individuals (i.e. also on the secondary market). Personalised football tickets are also common in the Premier League, especially as digital tickets are usually used here. However, it is generally possible to transfer personal data without any problems, which must be arranged by the respective seller.

Apart from this, however, it is highly unusual for the personal data on tickets to be checked at the entrance to the stadium. As tens of thousands of visitors are always streaming through the gates, it would also be practically impossible to check all tickets and ticket holders in the short time before a match. Nevertheless, it’s worth playing it safe – especially if you’re a German fan who can’t communicate too well at the gates of Premier League stadiums.

Are there football trips with Premier League tickets?

As tickets for Premier League matches are as popular as they are limited, so-called football trips or fan holidays are an increasingly common business model. These fan holidays are package deals where the tour operator guarantees one or more tickets and offers them in conjunction with hotel accommodation, travel to and from the match.

One example of this is Vietentours, where fan holidays to all Premier League football clubs can be selected. Prices are usually in the mid three- to four-digit range and are per person for ticket plus accommodation. However, these offers can rarely be booked directly. Instead, interested parties must first make an enquiry, after which it will only become clear whether a fan trip and a free ticket are actually available.

Incidentally, there is usually no precise information about which tickets, i.e. which seats in the stadium, are involved. Interested parties should therefore always check the exact details and weigh up whether the price is justified. Under certain circumstances, a ticket from the secondary market may in fact be the cheaper choice.
