For the 2009/10 season, UEFA made an attempt to spice up the UEFA Cup, which had gradually become less important than the Champions League. As a result, the decision was made to change the name to the Europa League and to introduce a new format.

Since then, there has been no shortage of illustrious names in the Europa League: Liverpool FC, Olympique Marseille, Sporting Lisbon and West Ham United are just a few recent examples.

For example, it was an unforgettable moment for the team and fans when Eintracht Frankfurt won the final in 2022. On the way there, Eintracht was an absolute crowd puller and tickets for home and away games always sold out quickly.

In general, Europa League tickets for the best seats are in high demand everywhere. If you want to experience legendary evenings with international flair live, you have to be quick or lucky.

How do I get Europa League tickets?

First of all, it is important to note that the Europa League (like the Champions League) takes place in different phases. This also means that there are different ways to get a ticket. For some clubs, the qualifying phase is at the very beginning. German clubs, for example, face smaller and possibly unknown teams in the first and second legs. The rush for tickets is usually not yet so great here.

The actual competition finally starts with the group stage. Each team has 3 home games and 3 away games. Many clubs usually offer a season ticket or a 3-game package for all home games in advance. Apart from this, tickets are also available in advance as day tickets, depending on availability.

Season ticket holders and club members always have an advantage. They usually have the chance to buy Europa League tickets in advance before the free sale of remaining tickets begins. This also applies to the final round after the group stage. Here, every home and away match could be a team’s last in the competition. The rush for tickets is correspondingly high here.

There are various options for buying tickets. The first is the respective clubs themselves with their official ticket shop. In addition, some clubs open their own secondary market for the resale of unused tickets or individual tickets from season tickets. On the other hand, the external secondary market with ticket exchanges such as Viagogo or StubHub as well as platforms such as Ebay or classified adverts is generally permanently accessible. More on this later.

For which clubs are Europa League tickets available?

Of course, German fans are mainly interested in the German representatives in the competition. In the 2023/2024 season, Europa League tickets will be available for SC Freiburg or Bayer Leverkusen until they are eventually eliminated from the competition. Freiburg will face West Ham United, Olympiakos Piraeus and Backa Topola (Serbia) in the group stage. Meanwhile, Leverkusen have been drawn into a supposedly easy group: Bayer 04 are favourites against Molde FK (Norway), BK Häcken (Sweden) and Qarabag Agdam (Azerbaijan).

With the exception of SC Freiburg and Bayer 04 Leverkusen, the Europa League of course harbours potential for great games in general. With Ajax Amsterdam, Sparta Prague, Slavia Prague and LASK in Linz, there are several clubs whose home games in the Europa League are also easily accessible from Germany.

The games of the German teams are usually well attended at home or, depending on the opponent, quickly sold out. So if you really want to support your team in the Europa League, you might have a good chance at an away game.

Either way, the following applies to all tickets for the Europa League: it’s best to be quick and, if in doubt, simply check the offers on ticket exchanges.

How much do tickets for the Europa League cost?

Due to the total of 32 participating teams in the Europa League from many different countries, there is no standardised price for Europa League tickets. For example, tickets for Sheriff Tiraspol from the Republic of Moldova are likely to be considerably cheaper than for Liverpool FC or Villareal FC. This also applies to the ticket prices for German teams when such clubs are the guests.

Apart from that, there are of course different ticket categories and therefore individual prices. As far as the German teams are concerned, their price level in the European Cup is roughly the same as in the Bundesliga – with a slight mark-up.

For the match between Bayer 04 Leverkusen and BK Häcken, the prices were as follows:

  • Seat category 1: 50 Euro
  • Seat category 2: 40 Euro
  • Seat category 3: 30 Euro
  • Standing room category 4: 15 Euro

These prices are for full-paying tickets. SC Freiburg also has similar ticket prices and categories. From the final round of the competition onwards, slightly higher prices can be expected – and also higher demand.

What cheap Europa League tickets are available?

Discounted tickets are also available from the clubs in the Europa League. For the Bayer Leverkusen tickets listed above, the discounted prices are 43 euros, 34 euros, 26 euros and 11 euros. There are also cheaper youth tickets and children’s tickets for young people aged 19 to 14 and children under this age.

Europa League tickets with a discount are generally available from most clubs for:

  • People with severe disabilities
  • Pupils
  • Apprentices
  • Students.

In many cases, pensioners and volunteers are also entitled to a discount. The exact criteria vary from club to club, of course. It is important that the right to a discount can be proven when entering the stadium (e.g. with a student ID). This is also important to bear in mind when buying tickets on the secondary market.

When can I buy Europa League tickets?

Some clubs make it possible to purchase season tickets for the European Cup at the start of the season and before the group stage draw. The later free sales of individual one-day tickets are then basically remaining contingents. The advance sale of day tickets begins two to three weeks before a match date, provided that this has already been precisely scheduled by UEFA.

It should be noted that there are usually several sales phases for the tickets. In the first two phases, only season ticket holders and club members have the chance to secure their tickets. During this time, the standing areas of the stadiums are usually sold out and many club members go to their regular seats. This is followed by free sales and the opening of a club-internal secondary market, if there is one.

Where can I buy Europa League tickets?

The first port of call for tickets is the clubs themselves. So if you are quick and lucky, you can get a ticket at the regular price in the online shop or at a regional advance booking office of a club. Please note that registration with personal data is required to purchase tickets in the online shop. This also applies to the possible secondary market at Bayer 04, SC Freiburg and Co.

The other option is, as mentioned, the ticket exchanges and various platforms of the external secondary market. In many cases, offers for Europa League tickets can already be found there if the clubs still have advance sales for season ticket holders and club members. This is due to the fact that some of the thousands of ticket buyers then decide to buy the tickets again straight away – or, of course, because some of them deliberately only buy the tickets for resale.

Secondary market: Europa League tickets on Viagogo and Co.

Europa League ticket viagogo

It should be noted that buying tickets on the secondary market is by no means illegal. So anyone who buys a Europa League ticket on Viagogo, eBay or other sites is acting in full compliance with the law. Nevertheless, there are always reports of fraudsters and overpriced tickets.

While the price remains a matter of supply and demand, possible fraud can be prevented:

  • Payment method: Bank transfers are not a secure payment method, while PayPal offers buyer protection.
  • Validity: Ideally, reputable sellers can verify the authenticity and validity of the ticket.
  • Shipping method: For hardcover tickets, insured shipping should always be used.
  • Price refund: If the seller offers a price refund in the event of a game cancellation, this demonstrates seriousness.

If there is no doubt about any of these points and the price is reasonable (slight increases are always common), there is nothing to stop you from buying the ticket. One final point that should always be considered when buying tickets from the secondary market is the personalisation of tickets.

Are Europa League tickets personalised?

At least for professional clubs from Germany and the other major leagues, tickets are usually personalised. However, it is questionable whether it is possible to change the personalisation in each case. In the case of German clubs, this is usually only possible once. If you buy a ticket from Viagogo, eBay or similar providers, you may have to expect someone else’s name to appear on the ticket. However, the sellers of reputable ticket exchanges in particular offer the option of personalisation.

However, third-party personalisation does not necessarily lead to problems. In fact, the data on the tickets is hardly ever checked. After all, tens of thousands of visitors flock to a match and constant checks would lead to chaos.

However, there are also games where special attention is paid to security and, depending on the situation, checks may well be carried out. This applies, for example, if the holder of a ticket wants to enter the home section of a stadium but does not correspond to the usual appearance of the country and does not speak the respective language. This sometimes leads to scepticism on the part of the security staff.

Tickets for the Europa League Final

The Europa League final is the highlight of the tournament and, alongside the Champions League final, is generally a highlight of every season in Europe. There is naturally a huge rush for the available tickets, especially among the fans of the participating teams. The clubs each receive an equal number of tickets for the final, depending on the capacity of the stadium.

UEFA uses the remaining seats itself and distributes them to partners, sponsors and the general public. There is a free advance sale for the latter. However, interested parties must first apply, while a draw will later decide who gets a ticket to the Europa League final.

As far as the prices for public tickets are concerned, there are again different categories. In the 2023 final at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest, these were

  • Category 4: 40 Euro
  • Category 3: 65 Euro
  • Category 2: 100 Euro
  • Category 1: 150 Euro

Tickets from the clubs participating in the final are not quite as expensive, but of course also at a higher price level than usual. However, it can be assumed that their contingent has already been used up by season ticket holders and club members and that there will be no free advance sales. However, experience shows that there are many offers on the secondary market every year.

Europa League tickets for people with disabilities

Finally, a separate category for tickets in the Europa League, as in the Bundesliga, are the barrier-free tickets. Both the clubs and UEFA usually offer tickets for wheelchair users, people with visual impairments and other people with disabilities at the price of the lowest ticket category or lower. This usually includes a free ticket for accompanying persons.

Of course, it is not possible to make a general statement about the exact offer, criteria and modalities of ticket purchase at this point. Interested parties should therefore always enquire with the respective clubs in advance – not least because tickets for wheelchair users and the severely disabled often have to be applied for using a form.

The history of the Europa League

Here is a brief overview of the history of the Europa League to date.

The UEFA Europa League is a football tournament that was launched in the 1970s. The aim was to give teams that could not qualify for the national champions or cup winners the opportunity to take part in an international tournament.

The first winner of the UEFA Europa League was Tottenham Hotspur in 1972, and since then there have been many memorable moments and surprising twists and turns over the years.

The UEFA Europa League was first played in 1971/72 and was known as the UEFA Cup until 2009. It is a tournament for teams that do not finish in the top places in their domestic leagues. It is also for teams that win their country’s second-highest cup competition.

In the early years, only a few nations were represented in the UEFA Cup. For example, only 16 teams took part in the 1971/72 season. However, the competition quickly grew in popularity and by 1979/80, 32 teams were represented.

Over the years, some of Europe’s biggest clubs have won the UEFA Cup or Europa League Cup. These include clubs such as Liverpool (3 times), Juventus (3 times), Inter Milan (3 times), Tottenham Hotspur (2 times), Ajax (1 time), Chelsea (2 times) and most recently Eintracht Frankfurt. Spanish clubs have been particularly successful in recent years: Sevilla have won the competition a record-breaking six times since 2006.

One of the most memorable moments in the history of the UEFA Cup/Europa League occurred in 2010, when Fulham FC miraculously came from 1-0 down to beat Juventus 4-1 in the round of 16. The game was played in front of a sell-out crowd at Craven Cottage in London and is widely regarded as one of the greatest comebacks of all time.

In recent years, the UEFA Cup/Europa League has been dominated by Spanish clubs. Since 2011, a Spanish team has won the competition every year. With the exception of 2013, when Chelsea from England won. Sevilla FC has been particularly successful. The club has won the competition five times during this period (2006, 2007, 2014, 2015 and 2016).

Looking to the future, it is clear that the UEFA Europa League will continue to be an important tournament for European football clubs. With more nations now represented than ever before and some of the biggest clubs in the world regularly competing for the title, the League is set to remain one of the most popular football tournaments for years to come.
