The French Ligue 1 is one of the top 5 football leagues in Europe. On the one hand, this is reflected in the teams’ regular appearances in European competitions. On the other hand, the current spectator numbers also prove this. Whether it’s Paris Saint Germain’s Parc des Princes, Olympique Marseille’s Orange Vélodrome or one of the smaller stadiums – the numbers for most clubs are close to a regular sell-out.
Ligue 1 tickets are popular and the atmosphere in France’s top football league promises a great experience for football fans everywhere. If you want to experience the stars of PSG live, you will of course have to reckon with higher costs. In addition, buying tickets from Germany is of course a little more complicated. But there are options.

To buy tickets for a match in Ligue 1, football fans can of course take the direct route. As in the Bundesliga or other prominent leagues, tickets are always sold primarily via the ticket shops of the individual clubs. As everywhere else, season tickets and ticket allotments for club members are excluded from the freely available allotments.
The problem here is that the websites of the respective clubs can usually only be displayed in French or English. In addition, a registration process is usually necessary. This can be a hurdle for people who spontaneously decide to buy free day tickets.
Another option are so-called football trips or fan holidays. These are package deals offered by certain travel providers. The price includes football tickets for a selected match as well as accommodation and travel costs. Accordingly, the total price for such a football trip is relatively high and fans have little influence on the details regarding the place of accommodation, the distance to the stadium and so on.
It is therefore even cheaper to look for a ticket on the secondary market and then organise the travel and accommodation near the stadium yourself if necessary. Especially as the proximity to France may make an overnight stay in France superfluous.
Overall, Ligue 1 tickets are slightly more expensive than Bundesliga tickets, although tickets there are still considerably cheaper than in the English Premier League, for example. Paris Saint Germain is the outlier in all of this. With its stars around Kylian Mbappé, PSG is considered the absolute favourite to win the title every year and therefore attracts the most football fans. Meanwhile, the Parc des Princes only holds just under 50,000 spectators.
The Parisian stadium is divided into many different categories, some of which are priced in the mid double-digit range and some in the low to mid three-digit range. For example, PSG’s home game against mid-table club Stade Reims:
Overall, however, PSG’s ticket prices are not a benchmark for the entire league. Otherwise, three-digit and high double-digit prices can only be found at the very popular clubs Olympique Marseille, Olympique Lyon, OGC Nice, LOSC Lille or RC Lens. In contrast, tickets are considerably cheaper for teams in the lower table, such as Le Havre AC or Montpellier.
In addition, away tickets in Ligue 1 can be an absolute bargain. For some years now, there has been a price cap of just €10 for each away ticket in the entire league. However, the quotas are usually only 5% of the total capacity of a stadium and only in a few cases a little more.
Especially for home games of the big and popular clubs, these tickets sell out quickly or are generally only available to club members of the away team and season ticket holders. If you want to have a chance, you ideally need to be in contact with an organised fan club of a French club.
In the long term, it is also worth keeping a close eye on the Ligue 1 fixture list. As is usual in almost all leagues, there are always English weeks, which means that league matches are also played on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays. In some cases, the ticket prices for such matches, which also take place in the evening, are somewhat lower than usual.
Ticket sales for French teams generally start around 4 weeks before a match. PSG is once again an exception. At Paris, advance sales for league matches sometimes start several months before a match, as demand is very high anyway. The club’s internal secondary market is also open throughout the entire period, although registration on the club’s website is required.
Apart from the secondary market of the various football clubs, it is always worth taking a look at the general secondary market for football tickets, i.e. on ticket exchanges such as Viagogo, StubHub and similar portals. Classified adverts and eBay are also part of the secondary market, but there is hardly any regulation of transactions here. The aforementioned official ticket exchanges, on the other hand, offer the advantage that they act as intermediaries between ticket sellers and ticket buyers, making ticket purchases more secure. It is important that buyers pay attention to a few things in advance:
Personalised football tickets are now common practice in almost all professional leagues in Europe, especially for the big clubs in the top 5 leagues. In particular, personalisation is the standard in European competition. In Ligue 1, football fans should also expect personalised tickets, especially for matches involving PSG, Olympique Lyon, OGC Nice and the other top teams.
However, this hardly poses a problem for ticket buyers, even if the tickets are from the secondary market. On the one hand, it is usually very easy to change personal details via the ticket app and, on the other hand, the relevant data is almost never checked at the stadium entrance. In fact, it is practically impossible to check all tickets for tens of thousands of spectators on a match day.
