FC Phönix Lübeck will host Borussia Dortmund in a cup match on 17 August. The highlight match for the lower league club will take place in Hamburg’s Volksparkstadion. Using the stadium of city rivals VFB Lübeck was out of the question for those responsible due to the fan rivalry. The cup opener is Nuri Sahin’s first competitive match as coach of the Black & Yellows.
Dortmund with extra large guest area: Lübeck with club record
Hamburg’s Volksparkstadion has a capacity of 57,000. An extra-large guest block has been set up for the Bundesliga team from Dortmund. BVB will be provided with a total of 16,000 tickets. The guest area is extended by the neighbouring blocks 9 to 16 on the south and west stands.
For 1. FC Phönix Lübeck, 3,000 tickets have been made available in the west stand. The match between the fourth division club and last season’s Champions League finalists is a special highlight for the underdogs. In this match, the Lübeck club will achieve a record attendance in its 121-year club history. In general, it could be the highest attendance for a match involving Lübeck.
The Lübeck club has never had to organise an event of this size before. Those responsible have been assured of support in talks with the HSV club management.
The Hamburg club has the relevant experience and structures to support the Lübeck club actively in organising the event. The home stadium at Buniamshof of 1. FC Phönix Lübeck has a capacity of just 3,000 spectators and does not fulfil the guidelines for a cup match.
