The history of the Jahn Regensburg club

The club was founded on 15 July 1898 as “1. Spielvereinigung Regensburg” and played its first match on 6 August 1898 against FC Stern Regensburg. The club changed its name to “SpVgg Jahn Regensburg” in 1919 and to “SSV Jahn Regensburg” in 1933.

The club’s heyday was in the 1920s, when it finished runners-up in the Bavarian District League (II) in 1921 and 1922 and won the championship in 1923. This led to qualification for the South German Championship, where SpVgg finished last out of five teams. Nevertheless, the club managed to win the Bavarian Cup that year.

In 1933, National Socialist Germany came to power and the football clubs were forcibly merged into the Reichsbundesliga (I). The new club was unable to qualify for the Reichsbundesliga and was relegated to the 2nd division. After the Second World War, “TV Jahn” was re-established as an independent club, while “SSV Jahn” was re-established as “1. Spielvereinigung Regensburg”, which later became SSV Jahn Regensburg again.

In 1957, SSV reached the final of the DFB Cup, losing 3:1 to Borussia Dortmund. In 1967, the club qualified for the Bundesliga for the first time, but was relegated after just one season. They returned to the Bundesliga for two seasons in 1971/72 and 1972/73, but were relegated again. In the following four decades, they played mainly in the second division before being promoted to the Bundesliga again in 2012. However, after just one season in Germany’s top division, they were relegated again.

The Jahnstadion Regensburg stadium

When Regensburg’s Jahnstadion was inaugurated in the summer of 2015, it signalled a new era for the club. However, the club initially found itself back in amateur football after being relegated to the fourth division. Things initially went well in the new stadium, with nine wins from ten games in the 2015/16 season, Jahn Regensburg was clearly on course for the championship.

However, an interim lead of twelve points over Wacker Burghausen, their main rivals for the relegation spot, was squandered by the winter break. SSV presented former international Heiko Herrlich as his successor, under whom the team got back on track and won the regional league title ahead of schedule. In the relegation to the 3rd division – in which they ultimately defeated VfL Wolfsburg II 0:1 and 2:0 – Regensburg became the first team ever to be relegated directly to the 3rd division.

Having been promoted, Jahn made the breakthrough at Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen at the start of the 2016/17 season; his successor was Achim Beierlorzer, who managed to keep the club for three seasons but left after finishing 12th.

What ticket prices can I expect?

The ticket prices for the individual stands at the Jahnstadion vary. A ticket for the north stand costs €10 and €12.50 for the south stand. Tickets for children and students cost €5.00.

The North Stand is the cheaper option, but offers a poorer view of the pitch than the South Stand. The South Stand also has more comfortable seats than the North Stand. Children and students can save money by buying tickets for the North or South Stand, as long as they don’t mind sitting in the less comfortable seats.
