After both FC Bayern Munich and Bayer 04 Leverkusen lost in the Bundesliga at the weekend, the two Bundesliga clubs met in the second leg of the round of 16 in the Champions League at the BayArena on Tuesday evening. After Munich’s 3-0 win in the first leg and Florian Wirtz’s injury at the weekend in the match against SV Werder Bremen, the second leg was dominated by the German record champions.
Two early yellow cards and substitute keeper Urbig could have been chances for Leverkusen
Both Laimer and Coman received a yellow card within the first 10 minutes of the game and had to be careful not to go into the dressing room early for the rest of the match. The injury to former national goalkeeper Manuel Neuer also had football experts wondering before the game whether Leverkusen’s attack could have an easy game. However, Munich played with confidence, rarely allowing their opponents to create any chances and in the second half, the FCB show in the last 16 of the Champions League was to turn out completely in favour of the team from Munich.
Kane and Davies fire Bayern into the Champions League quarter-finals
With goals from Harry Kane in the 52nd minute and Alphonso Davies in the 71st minute, Bayern secured a 5-0 aggregate score against Bayer 04 Leverkusen and many football fans would certainly have wished for more excitement. But in the end, victory in this head-to-head was clearly in Bayern’s favour and Bayer Leverkusen must therefore bid farewell to the Champions League for at least the 2024/2025 season. Meanwhile, Bayern’s journey towards the final dahoam continues.
