Nothing makes a football fan’s heart beat faster than the triumph in the last game of a competition. The final moment when an entire season is crowned with a title in the final. For the German clubs, this opportunity presents itself every year in the final of the DFB Cup.

If you want to experience it live, you need luck. When Bundesliga clubs Eintracht Frankfurt and RB Leipzig met in the 2023 cup final and RBL won, the Olympiastadion was sold out – and could have been filled twice or three times over. So how can you get tickets for the 2024 DFB Cup final?

Current tickets for the DFB Cup final

How do you get tickets for the DFB Cup final?

In principle, the DFB itself organises the allocation of tickets for the final in Berlin. The total capacity available in the Olympiastadion is almost 75,000 seats (there is no standing room). Around two thirds of this contingent will be allocated to the two participating clubs.

The clubs themselves then organise ticket sales individually at their own discretion. This usually means that the tickets go to the most loyal supporters – i.e. club members, members of fan clubs and season ticket holders. In most cases, however, demand exceeds supply, meaning that there is often a lottery and many interested parties are left empty-handed. As a neutral spectator with no club affiliation, it is practically impossible to get a final ticket for one of the teams.

The situation is different for the remaining third of the tickets, which are still held by the DFB. After a certain proportion of these tickets are retained for sponsors, partners and the like, the remaining contingent will actually go to the public. After a short application phase, the DFB organises a lottery, after which randomly selected people can each buy a ticket for the DFB Cup final.

Fan travel and ticket exchanges

There are two options for those who have not had any luck through official channels: Firstly, many fan and football travel providers, such as Vietentours, offer travel packages with a supposed ticket guarantee. In addition to the final ticket, hotel accommodation and possibly other extras are also booked. In reality, however, these are often tickets for VIP seats, meaning that the prices are correspondingly high.

Interested parties can also expect to pay higher prices on the secondary market. Viagogo, Ticketbande, Reservix and similar portals always have many offers for all kinds of football matches. There is of course a high demand, especially for final matches, so it is not unusual for ticket prices to be even higher. This is why there is often talk of a black market, but it should be noted that buying tickets from Viagogo and the like is absolutely legal. Sometimes it is even the last chance to buy coveted tickets.

How much do tickets for the DFB Cup final cost?

The prices for DFB Cup final tickets vary from year to year. On the one hand, the participating teams themselves determine the price level and, on the other hand, the DFB sets the ticket prices for the publicly available contingent each year. With regard to the latter option, it is always worth taking a look at last year’s final.

For the 2023 cup final, public tickets were available in four different categories:

  • Spectators already paid 60 euros for category 4, behind the gates.
  • Category 3, in the bends, cost 90 euros.
  • Category 2, outside on the main and opposite stands, cost 110 euros.
  • The most expensive was category 1, in the centre of the main and opposite stands, for 150 euros.

Apart from these ticket categories, there were also a few seats with restricted access for 45 euros and ticket discounts for children. In addition, tickets for the severely disabled and wheelchair users at the DFB Cup final always cost the same as the cheapest ticket category.

When do tickets for the DFB Cup final go on sale?

In fact, there are always many fans of Bundesliga clubs who optimistically plan their trip to Berlin well in advance. Meanwhile, tickets are only allocated a few weeks before the cup final – sometimes even before the matches in the semi-finals, before the finalists have been decided.

To be more precise, the DFB usually starts the one-week application phase for the draw for final tickets at the end of April to the beginning of May. The allocation takes place around one to two weeks after the application deadline, with those selected having a few more days to actually purchase their tickets. The procedure is similar with the participating clubs drawing lots – but usually only for season ticket holders and club members.

DFB Cup final tickets on the secondary market

Although the time between ticket purchase and the cup final is quite short, there are always people among the thousands of ticket holders who have to cancel their trip to the stadium for various reasons. Tickets are then often resold on ticket exchanges, eBay and classified adverts or on social media. Buyers should pay attention to a few important aspects when using the secondary market:

  • The resale of tickets takes place on ticket exchanges between private individuals, while Viagogo and similar providers act as intermediaries or marketplaces.
  • The private sellers set the ticket price themselves, so higher prices are common and it is worth comparing prices between different offers.
  • Insured shipping should always be used for the dispatch of hard tickets.
  • With bank transfer as a payment method, buyers take a risk, while PayPal and similar options offer more buyer protection.
  • It should always be clear whether the tickets are personalised or not and whether it is possible to change the personal data.

Are tickets for the DFB Cup Final personalised?

In its ATGB (General Ticket Terms and Conditions), the DFB points out that tickets may be personalised when purchased for certain reasons. In this case, the ticket is personalised to one person and is only valid for that person. This may also be the case for the DFB Cup final, for example, in terms of security measures.

However, the DFB then also offers the option of a one-off re-personalisation of the ticket via the customer account. Buyers of DFB Cup final tickets on the secondary market should therefore ensure that they are registered as a new ticket holder if necessary.

However, if this does not or cannot happen for certain reasons, there is still a chance of being able to use the ticket as normal. After all, personal data checks at the entrance to the Olympic Stadium are highly unusual and difficult to implement anyway given the large number of spectators.

How much do VIP tickets for the DFB Cup Final cost?

Quite apart from the sale of normal day tickets for the cup final, there is also the option of VIP tickets for the Olympic Stadium. VIP tickets for the DFB Cup final in Berlin are offered by the DFB itself directly via its website. There are a total of six different types of VIP tickets:

  • VIP boxes for groups of 10 people, with many extras at a price of 1250 to 1750 euros
  • Atrium with best seats directly behind the grandstand of honour – Price: 1100 Euro
  • Business lounges with top category seating – price: 750 euros
  • VIP foyer with special entertainment programmes and seats in the main and opposite stands – price: 750 (VIP foyer south) or 800 euros (VIP foyer north)
  • Executive clubs with the best seats in the side areas of the main and opposite stands – price: 850 euros
  • Football Village with special entertainment programme incl. after-final party and top-category seats in the opposing stand – price: 850 euros

The prices quoted are per person and apply to the 2023 cup final. Similar prices and offers can be expected for the 2024 final. Of course, all VIP tickets for the DFB Cup Final come with additional individual benefits such as buffet catering, separate VIP entrances and more.

Important stadium information for the DFB Cup Final in Berlin

Very few spectators at the cup final in the Olympiastadion are from Berlin themselves, so fans should ideally familiarise themselves with the necessary information about the stadium, travel and parking situation in advance.

In general, for example, travelling by car is not recommended, as heavy traffic is to be expected and parking near the stadium will only be possible to a very limited extent. Instead, the use of the park-and-ride system is recommended. If it is necessary to use a car, it is advisable to arrive early. The Olympic Stadium will open 3 hours before the start of the DFB Cup Final.

The easiest way to get there is by public transport. A valid ticket for the final is also valid as a ticket for local public transport throughout the Berlin transport network from 3 pm on the day of the match, so that buses and trains can be used free of charge.

Visitors should also familiarise themselves with the stadium regulations. For example, it is usually permitted to take digital cameras and cameras used for private purposes, and power banks and small amounts of food are also allowed. Food, drink and fan merchandise in the stadium can be paid for with cash, card or contactless.

These were the highlights of the DFB Cup final

The fact that tickets for the DFB Cup final are so popular is certainly also due to the thrilling matches that have taken place in recent years. For example, when RB Leipzig won the first title in the club’s history in 2022, it was only after a thrilling penalty shoot-out. The 2016 top-of-the-table clash between FC Bayern and Borussia Dortmund ended in exactly the same way.

Eintracht Frankfurt also provided some highlights, losing to RBL in 2023, but having reached the final several times recently and beating FC Bayern 3:1 in 2018. Incidentally, Bayern’s last DFB Cup title was three years ago, when they beat Bayer Leverkusen 4:2.

The 2024 final also undoubtedly promises to be a great evening of football, whoever the winner may be. After all, title-holders Leipzig have already been eliminated, as have many other first division clubs – including Bayern Munich.
