Interesting facts about the Veltins-Arena
The Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen is one of the largest arenas in Germany and therefore also of great importance for international events. Important matches were held here during the 2006 World Cup. The Schalke Stadium will also be involved in the 2024 European Championships.
The modern arena was only built in 2001 and can hold 62,271 spectators for Schalke’s home matches, but only 54,740 for international matches due to the standing room ban. It is remarkable that the construction costs of almost 200 million were borne by the club itself. The Veltins-Arena is architecturally special for several reasons. It is one of only three arenas in Germany whose roof can be completely closed. This means that ideal conditions can be created even in heavy rain or snow.
The pitch can be moved out of the stadium on rails. The south curve was built to be suspended especially for this purpose. There is also a chapel in the stadium where weddings and christenings take place. An LED screen measuring 76.32 m² per side hangs above the centre of the stadium. This makes it the largest video installation in a European stadium. The stadium has been officially named the Veltins Arena since 2005. For many fans, however, the home ground is still the AufSchalke stadium.
But football is not the only sport celebrated in the Veltins-Arena. In 2018, the German Darts Masters 2018 took place in the arena. A record was broken here with over 20,000 spectators. The opening match of the Ice Hockey World Cup also attracted a record number of spectators in 2010.
The Veltins Arena has also hosted boxing matches, speedway championships and handball matches. As the roof can be completely closed and the pitch can be removed, the stadium can be converted for almost any event or concert.
