It’s hard to imagine, but in the early years of the Merkur-Spiel-Arena, there was neither Bundesliga action nor second division football to marvel at. Fortuna Düsseldorf played semi-professional football for a total of four years and had a state-of-the-art stadium at its disposal.

Ticket information for the Fortuna Düsseldorf stadium
With over 54,000 seats, the Merkur-Spiel-Arena is one of the 10 largest football stadiums in Germany. Nevertheless, Fortuna Düsseldorf’s home matches are always sold out. So if you want to secure the best seats in the stadium, you have to be quick.
Fans can choose between 44,683 seats and 9,917 standing places. Incidentally, the best view of the match is from the Merkur Stand in the upper tier or from the East Stand in the upper and lower tiers.
The Tuffi family block is located in blocks 9 to 12. In this non-smoking area, there are special children’s drinks and additional offers for the youngest fans. Children and young people up to the age of 18 are generally admitted when accompanied by a maximum of two adults. The prices are reduced compared to the rest of the stadium.
There is a separate area for guest fans between the east and north stands. Standing room only is available in the lower tier, while the upper tier also has seats for visiting fans. A total of around 5,300 seats are available.
If you want to attend the Merkur-Spiel-Arena with a special passion, sectors 33 to 35 and 36 to 39 are just right for you. This is where the club’s Ultras are seated, among others. There is also a special support area on the south curve, which is managed by the fans. Tickets are therefore not sold by Fortuna Düsseldorf, but by the club’s supporters.
You can easily buy tickets in advance via the club’s website. Simply select one of the upcoming home matches at the Fortuna Düsseldorf stadium and secure your favourite seats. Advance sales start around three weeks before the match day.
Stadium tour and events in the Merkur-Spiel-Arena: an overview
On Sundays without matches, you have the opportunity to get to know the Merkur-Spiel-Arena from a completely new perspective. The public stadium tours start punctually at 12:00 noon. The price is currently 5 euros per person. Registration is required in advance and can be made either by telephone or e-mail.
However, the tours are not just an absolute must for Fortuna fans. Everything revolves around Fortuna’s modern arena. You can take a look inside the changing rooms and find out how stars are channelled to the stage before their performance. You will also have exclusive access to the VIP areas and be there live when the roof of the Fortuna Düsseldorf stadium is completely closed.
The children’s birthday party at the Merkur-Spiel-Arena is also a special event. The child-friendly tour gives young fans an exclusive look behind the scenes. Stadium tours are also offered as part of stag parties and business events.
Visitor information for the former multifunctional arena in Düsseldorf
Admission on match days usually begins two hours before kick-off, but can also be shortened to 90 minutes in some cases. Home fans can enter the stadium via the south and north-west entrances. The north-east entrance is reserved exclusively for visiting fans. Bags and rucksacks are prohibited in the Merkur-Spiel-Arena and cannot be handed in anywhere directly at the stadium.
People with disabilities will find barrier-free seats in Block 13 for a pleasant stadium experience. Entrance is via the VIP area to avoid long waiting times. Fortuna Düsseldorf’s stadium also has dedicated spaces for walking frames, as these may not be taken into the stadium.
Tickets for the barrier-free areas of the Fortuna Düsseldorf stadium can only be purchased via the fan shop at Flinger Broich or the call centre. It is not possible to purchase these tickets in the online shop.
Seats for deaf fans will also be reserved in Block 102. A sign language interpreter will be available throughout the match to translate fan chants and stadium announcements. Tickets can only be purchased via a separate e-mail address.
Of course, fans with disabilities can also opt for a season ticket at the Fortuna Düsseldorf stadium. The tickets will be issued at a reduced price before the start of the season. However, the number is limited, so you should contact the club early if you are interested.
VIP tickets for the Fortuna Düsseldorf stadium
Of course, you can also experience Fortuna Düsseldorf home matches in the Merkur-Spiel-Arena from the VIP area. In addition to the 27 boxes, there are several hospitality areas that are guaranteed to make your match day experience unforgettable.
A very special atmosphere is guaranteed in the boxes in the South Stand. Here you are directly above the frenetic home fans and can fully soak up the atmosphere. However, the largest VIP seating area is located in the West Stand. From here you have a great view of the action.
With space for over 1,000 guests, the Merkur Business Club is the largest hospitality area in the Fortuna Düsseldorf stadium. Here you can enjoy first-class catering from two hours before the match until two hours after the match. There is also continuous support from hostesses.
You also have the option of reserving a box for you and your friends, colleagues or family. In addition to the classic business boxes, there are also special event boxes that provide additional entertainment on match day.
Interesting facts about the Merkur-Spiel-Arena
With 54,600 seats, the Merkur-Spiel-Arena in Düsseldorf is the ninth largest stadium in Germany. During international matches, the capacity is reduced to 51,500 seats as there is a standing room ban.
The stadium was built under the name Multifunktionsarena Düsseldorf, but was renamed LTU Arena when it opened. Between 2008 and 2019, the fashion brand Esprit secured the naming rights, whereupon the name was changed to Esprit Stadion. The new name Merkur-Spiel-Arena has been used since 2019.
The arena was opened in 2004 and offers a number of special amenities thanks to its modern design. Thanks to air and underfloor heating, the Fortuna Düsseldorf stadium can be heated to 15 degrees in winter.
Fortuna Düsseldorf has been the stadium’s home team since it opened. Between 2005 and 2007, however, the American football team Rhein Fire also played its matches in the multifunctional arena in Düsseldorf. In 2009, Bayer Leverkusen also had to switch to the stadium as their own arena was being renovated during the Bundesliga season. KFC Uerdingen 05 has also had to switch to the Fortuna Düsseldorf Stadium to play its home matches.
Five matches will be played in the stadium during the 2024 European Championships. The multifunctional arena in Düsseldorf is also used for a wide variety of events outside of soccer. As the roof of the arena can be completely closed, the opening match of the 2024 European Handball Championship was held in Düsseldorf. The Merkur-Spiel-Arena also hosted the Eurovision Song Contest in 2011.
How to get to the Fortuna Düsseldorf stadium

The Merkur-Spiel-Arena is located in the north-west of the city and just a few minutes’ drive from the airport. It is also only a few minutes’ walk to the Rhine, but it is currently not possible to travel to Fortuna Düsseldorf’s home matches by boat.
Although the stadium is located directly at the exhibition centre, parking options are limited. If you want to travel to the Fortuna arena by car, you should arrive early. It is easy to get there via the A44 motorway and Danzinger Straße. As the stadium is not located directly in the city, you should not expect any traffic restrictions on home match days.
If possible, however, you should use public transport. The U78 underground line goes to the ARENA/Messe stop and takes you within walking distance of the stadium. You can also take the underground directly from the main railway station to the Fortuna Düsseldorf stadium. Your ticket is valid as a ticket in the VRR area.
Alternatively, you can also take the 722 bus directly to the D-Stadthalle stop. From there, it is around a 5-minute walk to the Merkur-Spiel-Arena.
